African Cinema and Revolution: Part II

Balufu Bakupa Kanyinda (Juju Factory, 2007) discussed independent filmmaking in Africa at the Here & Now: African American Art & Film Conference @ NYU, November 16-17, in memory of Ousmane Sembene.

Kanyinda was adamant about the need for independent financing for creative autonomy. After he finished speaking, Muhama Traore pointed out that Juju Factory, nominated for an award at the biennial FESPACO film festival in Ouagadougou, was ultimately passed over because it did not use any financing from the French government, a main festival supporter.
